Floss Calculator

Estimate how much embroidery floss — and how many DMC skeins — you need for your project. A standard skein is ~7.95 m (8.7 yd).

How it works

Each stitch covers 2.54 ÷ count inches of fabric. Length per stitch is scaled by the number of strands and a waste factor (two diagonals for a full cross, one line for backstitch). Results are estimates — actual usage depends on tension, thread starts/ends, and stitching style.

Example: 1,700 full cross stitches with 2 strands on 14-count Aida uses roughly one full DMC skein (≈ 8.7 yards / 7.95 m per skein). The calculator always rounds skein counts up so you never run short mid-colour.

Use this before buying floss for a new chart, or when checking whether your stash has enough of a colour to finish a section.
