How it works

Stitched size = stitches ÷ effective count. For Aida, count is stitches per inch. For evenweave/linen, effective count = count ÷ over (e.g. 28-ct over 2 = 14 spi). Margins are added on every side, then the cut size is rounded up.

Example: a 140 × 200 stitch pattern on 14-count Aida is 10" × 14.3" (25.4 × 36.3 cm) stitched. Add a 3" framing margin per side and the recommended fabric cut is 16" × 20.5" (≈ 40.6 × 52 cm).

Use this calculator before cutting fabric for a cross stitch, hardanger, or blackwork project to avoid running out of border when framing or hooping.
